The biological meaning of adult refers to an animal with the capacity to reproduce. In the human context adults have significance that is shaped by the legal and social world. Legal adults are those who attains the age of maturity. They are defined as independent, self sufficient and accountable. They may also be regarded as an "major". The age of 18 is the legal adult age, however, this definition may differ according to the nation, lawful rights or psychological development.

In the lifespan of an individual, adulthood refers to the age in which the person has achieved full physical and intellectual maturity. Many people believe that the age of adulthood begins at age 20 or greater. Following middle age (starting at around 40) is the time to reach the age of old age (around age 60). Early adulthood begins between the age of 18 to 30. Mid-life adulthood begins around between the mid-30s and 60s. Late adulthood starts at mid-60s. As we enter the initial stage of adulthood (between 20-40) the bodies of our children have reached full maturation, even though our height and weight could increase slightly. As we enter our early adulthood the physical capabilities of our bodies are at their best such as the strength of our muscles, our reaction speed, sensory abilities, and cardiac functioning.
